South Korea's National Tax Service (NTS) is initiating a selection process for a private custodian service provider to manage seized cryptocurrency assets. This move follows an incident in February where an accidental leak of digital wallet recovery phrases led to unauthorized token transfers, exposing vulnerabilities in the current safekeeping mechanisms.
This initiative signifies the South Korean authorities' efforts to standardize the custody process for seized crypto assets, addressing shortcomings in digital asset storage and management revealed by a series of operational errors.

Newly Formed Task Force to Oversee Custodian Selection Process
The selection of a custodian service provider is reportedly being spearheaded by a newly established task force, primarily responsible for driving the modernization of digital asset management systems.

The task force is currently focused on several improvements, including the development of operational manuals covering the entire lifecycle of seized assets, from seizure and storage to final liquidation. Additionally, the task force will conduct relevant assessments and personnel training.
The group is also preparing to establish a dedicated department for cryptocurrency-related affairs. An NTS official stated that due to the relatively nascent nature of cryptocurrencies, responsibilities are currently dispersed across various departments. However, according to ZDNet Korea, active preparations are underway to create a centralized management unit.
