In May 2025, Reform UK became the first UK political party to formally accept cryptocurrency donations. By the fourth quarter of 2025, the party had surpassed the Conservative and Labour parties in total donations received through crypto assets, becoming a new focal point in British political donations. This move aligns with party leader Nigel Farage's vision of making the UK a global crypto hub and echoes the positive attitudes of some international political figures towards digital assets.

However, this innovative approach quickly triggered alarm within Parliament. Several MPs pointed out that the anonymity and cross-border fluidity of crypto donations could provide a covert channel for foreign powers to interfere in British politics, calling for legislation to ban such forms of donations to safeguard electoral transparency and national security.

The main donor, Christopher Harborne, is a British-Thai businessman and veteran crypto investor who supported Farage's Brexit Party from 2019 to 2020. In August 2025, he donated £9 million to Reform UK, and this crypto donation is his second major political contribution, further highlighting the emerging role of crypto assets in political financing.
As the digitalization of political funding sources accelerates, how to strike a balance between encouraging innovation and preventing risks has become a pressing issue for UK policymakers.
