As institutional investors increasingly vie for crypto assets, major financial institutions are making their move.
Cryptocurrency Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) are investment vehicles that allow investors to gain indirect exposure to the cryptocurrency market without directly buying or holding virtual assets.
Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR), recently disclosed that the company's Bitcoin holdings are approximately three times larger than those of some Wall Street giants' Bitcoin ETFs.
Saylor founded MicroStrategy in 1989, initially as a software company. However, against the backdrop of economic uncertainty triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the company strategically pivoted to Bitcoin.
He pointed out that MicroStrategy's Bitcoin holdings are roughly three times the current cumulative net inflow of $63 billion into BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF.
In addition to BlackRock, Wall Street giants like Fidelity Investments and Franklin Templeton have also launched Bitcoin ETFs. The entry of Morgan Stanley will undoubtedly intensify market competition.
It is important to note that ETF issuers do not purchase Bitcoin for themselves but operate on behalf of the fund's shareholders. In contrast, Bitcoin-holding companies like MicroStrategy record Bitcoin on their balance sheets.
