Vitalik Buterin Urges Ethereum Community to Rethink Application Layer for Ecosystem Revival

Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin recently issued a profound call to the community, urging a rethinking of the application layer's design logic to drive renewed momentum for the entire ecosystem. He emphasized that to achieve genuine breakthroughs, it's crucial to break free from path dependency on existing architectures and build the next generation of decentralized applications from the ground up.

Buterin pointed out that Ethereum's core values—censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security (CROPS)—should not be sacrificed. He noted that the current application layer did not adequately incorporate privacy protection mechanisms from the outset, which has become a critical bottleneck for innovation. He suggested that a completely new application stack might be needed, rather than patching and upgrading the existing framework.

At the same time, he specifically emphasized the re-evaluation of Layer 2 (L2) solutions. He believes that while many current L2 solutions have increased throughput, they may not necessarily form the optimal synergy with the Ethereum mainnet. To achieve true technological integration, not only is engineering innovation needed, but also a shift in community culture towards a "rebuild mindset"—no longer asking "how to improve the existing system," but instead asking "if Ethereum were a blank slate, how would we design DeFi News, decentralized social networking, and identity authentication systems?" Through this thought experiment, Buterin hopes to inspire developers to break out of traditional paradigms and leverage Ethereum's increasingly powerful underlying capabilities to explore more original application forms that are closer to real user needs. He believes that only in this way can Ethereum break through the current innovation bottleneck and regain dominance in technology and the ecosystem.
