Tether and Bitfinex are accused of manipulating Bitcoin and Ethereum prices by issuing USDT during the 2017 bull market. A class-action lawsuit has been approved by the court to enter the evidence phase, which, if successful, could reshape the stablecoin regulatory framework.
A U.S. court has recently approved a class-action lawsuit against Tether and Bitfinex, allowing thousands of investors to jointly pursue legal action. The lawsuit alleges that the two companies artificially inflated the prices of Bitcoin and Ethereum during the 2017 cryptocurrency bull market through the large-scale issuance of USDT. The plaintiffs claim that this conduct led to irrational market surges, followed by price corrections that caused significant losses for numerous investors, with some estimates suggesting the impact could be in the billions of dollars.
The court has not made a final determination on whether Tether and Bitfinex violated the law, but rather ruled that the case qualifies for class-action status, moving it into the evidence submission phase. The plaintiffs are divided into two categories: one for investors who directly purchased crypto assets in the spot market, and another for traders who participated in trading through futures contracts. Both parties are required to submit complete evidence and legal arguments by March 9th, and the court is reviewing partially sealed judicial opinions.
Tether and Bitfinex have vehemently denied the allegations, stating that their USDT issuance and trading activities are fully compliant, and that the plaintiffs have a fundamental misunderstanding of how stablecoins operate. If the case is ultimately successful, it could set an important precedent for stablecoin regulation in the crypto market, promoting stricter regulations on stablecoin transparency, reserve disclosures, and market manipulation in the future.
Currently, the case has not yet entered the trial phase, but its progress has already raised industry concerns about stablecoin liquidity, market intervention, and regulatory boundaries.
