Kenya Launches Smart Traffic Fine System, Violations Trigger SMS Notifications

Kenya launches a fully automated traffic fine system that identifies violations via smart cameras and notifies vehicle owners via SMS. Overdue payments will restrict vehicle and driver's license services, enhancing enforcement efficiency and transparency.

Kenya has officially launched a fully automated traffic violation penalty system capable of real-time identification of illegal activities and sending fine notifications to offending drivers via SMS. The system requires no manual intervention, relying on smart cameras linked to a database to automatically capture common traffic violations such as speeding, running red lights, and illegal lane changes, and sends the fine information directly to the vehicle's registered mobile phone number.

President William Ruto Prior to the system's launch, President William Ruto criticized the slow progress of Transport Minister Davis Chirchir and the new Director-General of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Nashon Kondiwa, at a National Judicial Administration Council meeting on March 2, 2026. He explicitly demanded that relevant departments fully deploy intelligent traffic monitoring equipment in major cities nationwide starting that month. Subsequently, the system's implementation accelerated and it officially went live. Violators who receive a notification are required to complete payment at a KCB Bank branch within 7 days. Failure to pay within the deadline will result in additional interest, and the vehicle owner or driver will be restricted from using all NTSA online services—including driver's license renewal, vehicle transfer, and annual inspection registration—until the fine is cleared. This measure aims to enhance law enforcement transparency, reduce human intervention, and improve traffic management efficiency.
