Bitcoin breaks $70,000 while US stocks waver amid Iran tensions and oil price volatility. Market eyes CPI data and de-escalation signals, seeing crypto as a unique safe haven and price discovery tool in crisis.
On March 10, Bitcoin's price surged by a robust 4.6%, breaking through the $70,000 mark, while the US stock market experienced volatile consolidation. Market concerns over the escalating situation in Iran dampened the overall performance of risk assets. This stark contrast highlights the diverging trends between crypto assets and traditional financial markets.
On the same day, S&P 500 futures opened down 0.4%, and Nasdaq 100 futures also weakened by 0.3%, but both subsequently recovered their losses, eventually closing near flat, indicating investors' hesitation between geopolitical risks and oil price fluctuations.
Meanwhile, continuous inflows into Bitcoin ETFs and a simultaneous increase in stablecoin reserve sizes provided liquidity support for the price increase. Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan stated in an internal memo that this weekend "changed the operating logic of financial markets" and emphasized that the crypto market has become the only asset class with real-time price discovery capabilities in the current crisis.
Regarding the core factors driving Bitcoin's strength, market analysis is divided. Wintermute's Head of OTC Trading, Jake Ostrovskis, pointed out that oil price movements have a more direct impact than geopolitics itself—if crude oil prices remain above $80 per barrel, it will weaken market expectations for a Federal Reserve rate cut, which will put pressure on all risk assets, including crypto assets.
Looking ahead, Bitcoin's short-term trend will highly depend on two key variables: first, the US CPI data to be released on March 12, which will directly affect market judgments on the interest rate path; and second, whether the Trump administration's statements regarding a ceasefire in Iran can be translated into actual diplomatic de-escalation actions. Currently, the market remains cautious and watchful.
