The UK government identifies cryptocurrency as a key fraud risk for 2026-2029, introducing mandatory FCA authorization and a comprehensive regulatory framework in 2027 to combat crypto-related scams and restore public trust.
The UK government recently released an anti-fraud strategy document covering 2026-2029, explicitly including digital assets within its key regulatory scope, noting that cryptocurrencies are becoming an increasingly prominent source of fraud risk. The document reveals that the National Crime Agency launched a nationwide anti-fraud awareness campaign in 2025 to help the public identify scams, while the government is supporting law enforcement agencies such as the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) to enhance their investigative capabilities in crypto asset cases.
Since 2023, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has been rigorously scrutinizing platforms promoting crypto tokens to UK consumers, and the Treasury is advancing a comprehensive digital asset regulatory framework, scheduled for formal implementation in October 2027. According to the strategy, all crypto businesses operating in the UK must be authorized by the FCA and strictly adhere to its compliance requirements to curb illegal activities.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Home Office Minister Lord Hanson emphasized: “Every pound stolen represents a loss of funds that could have been invested in economic development. Every victim is a warning that we must take action. By implementing this strategy, we will make the UK a safer environment to live, work, and do business, sending a clear signal to criminals: there is nowhere to hide.”
Furthermore, recent public attention surrounding the influence of cryptocurrency donations on UK politicians continues to intensify, further prompting regulators to accelerate the improvement of relevant legal boundaries and transparency mechanisms.
