Amazon secured a court injunction against AI agent Comet, highlighting the conflict between platform sovereignty and user rights in the AI shopping era, raising concerns about automated consumption regulation.
The legal dispute between Amazon and Perplexity marks a turning point in the application of artificial intelligence in e-commerce. Recently, a U.S. federal court granted Amazon's request for a temporary injunction, preventing Perplexity's AI shopping agent, Comet, from accessing its platform. While this ruling does not definitively determine the merits of the case, it clearly states that user authorization for AI to act on their behalf does not equate to the platform granting access. This establishes an important precedent for platform control over automated access rights.
Amazon stated that it had repeatedly warned Perplexity and taken technical measures to block its access, but the latter continued to circumvent these restrictions. The core of the dispute concerns not only commercial interests but also the platform's control over user data and interfaces. If AI agents can directly jump from search to payment, they would bypass advertising slots and recommendation systems, directly impacting Amazon's advertising revenue model, projected to reach $68.6 billion in 2025.
Perplexity argues that its actions are based on users' autonomous rights, asserting that consumers have the right to use AI tools to optimize their shopping experience. However, Amazon cited a report released by security research firm Brave in October 2025, which pointed out that Comet has security vulnerabilities that could endanger user account security through screenshotting and malicious webpage-based prompt injection attacks.
Behind this case lies a fierce battle between tech giants and emerging AI companies over the boundaries of "agentic commerce." With AWS and OpenAI announcing a $38 billion strategic partnership in November 2025, planning to deploy large-scale AI computing power by the end of 2026, the role of AI agents in consumer decision-making will become increasingly critical. How to strike a balance between ensuring user freedom and maintaining the platform ecosystem has become a systemic issue that the industry urgently needs to address.
