Stablecoins Could Drive Global Deposits into US Banks: White House Advisor's View

White House cryptocurrency advisor Patrick McHenry believes that stablecoins pegged to the US dollar will bring global deposits into the US banking system, rather than causing capital outflows. This view directly challenges the claims of banking lobbyists, who argue that stablecoin yields threaten up to $6.6 trillion in domestic US deposits.

McHenry views stablecoins as an engine for dollar demand. He has described stablecoins as a "gateway drug" to global finance, arguing that citizens of other countries can gain access to the US dollar through stablecoins without needing to open a US bank account. The US government believes that this overseas demand will flow back into US Treasury bonds and the broader banking system through reserve requirements.

Despite banking industry warnings of a potential $6.6 trillion deposit outflow, the ultimate role of stablecoins in the US financial system remains unclear. The regulatory landscape surrounding stablecoins is still evolving, and future developments could significantly impact McHenry's predictions. Former US President Trump directly intervened in the matter, stating that "banks are threatening and undermining this genius bill, which is unacceptable," and added that banks "need to reach a good agreement with the cryptocurrency industry because it is in the best interests of the American people."
