Metaplanet will invest ¥4 billion into Japan's Bitcoin ecosystem through newly established subsidiaries. So, what exactly will Metaplanet's two new subsidiaries do?
Metaplanet Asset Management, headquartered in Miami, focuses on digital credit and Bitcoin capital markets, targeting investors in Asia and the West.
The Tokyo-listed company currently holds 35,102 Bitcoins, worth approximately $2.44 billion. Although the company has expanded into venture capital and financial services, CEO Simon Gerovich has made it clear that accumulating Bitcoin remains the company's primary focus.
How Will Metaplanet Ventures Operate?
Metaplanet Ventures will operate under three distinct projects, each targeting different stages of development in Japan's Bitcoin and digital asset infrastructure.
Funding for all three projects will come from cash flow generated by Metaplanet's existing Bitcoin treasury operations, rather than selling Bitcoin from its balance sheet.
Three Projects Overview
- Early-Stage Incubation: Investing in the earliest-stage teams and ideas, focusing on proof-of-concept and prototyping.
- Accelerator: Investing in teams that already have an MVP (minimum viable product) and are ready to scale.
- Strategic Investments: Investing in more established companies to complement Metaplanet's core Bitcoin strategy.
What is Metaplanet's First Investment?
Metaplanet Ventures has already announced its first deal. The subsidiary plans to invest up to ¥400 million (approximately $2.7 million) in JPYC Inc., Japan's first licensed JPY-pegged stablecoin issuer. This investment is planned for April and will take the form of a loan from the parent company.
A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency designed to maintain a fixed value relative to a reference asset, in this case, the Japanese Yen. Launched in October 2025, JPYC is backed by bank deposits and government bonds to maintain its 1:1 peg with the Yen and currently operates on Avalanche, Ethereum, and Polygon.
“Every Bitcoin transaction has two sides: Bitcoin and a currency. As this market institutionalizes, the currency side will also digitize. JPYC is building that rail in Japan, and we want to be a part of it.”
Why Focus on Japan?
Japan's regulatory environment is a core part of Metaplanet's strategic thinking. The country is expected to reclassify Bitcoin as a regulated financial instrument under its Financial Instruments and Exchange Act by January 2028. This reclassification will also introduce a uniform 20% capital gains tax on Bitcoin investments in Japan, replacing the current other income tax rates that can reach as high as 55% for high earners.
If this change goes through, it would significantly reduce the tax burden for Bitcoin investors in Japan, potentially greatly increasing institutional and retail participation. Metaplanet believes that the country will need a full domestic infrastructure stack to support this demand, including custody, settlement, compliance, lending, and payment rails, which do not yet exist at scale.
Gerovich said: “Japan has built the best regulatory framework in the world for digital assets. Now it needs companies, builders, and infrastructure to match.”

The second subsidiary, Metaplanet Asset Management, is headquartered in Miami and focuses on digital credit and Bitcoin capital markets. This division plans to develop investment products connecting Asian and Western capital markets.
