Tech Giants Pledge to Cover AI Data Center Electricity Costs

U.S. tech giants have signed a White House initiative, pledging to cover the increased electricity consumption costs of their artificial intelligence data centers, aiming to alleviate public concerns about rising electricity bills. The Trump administration stated that this move will ensure residents do not have to pay for the energy demands of large data facilities. "Many people are worried that the establishment of data centers will lead to soaring electricity prices, but this will not happen—problems that have occurred in the past will be prevented in the future," Trump said at a White House roundtable.

Previously, some communities resisted the construction of data centers due to concerns about excessive electricity load. Trump pointed out that as companies proactively bear infrastructure costs, public attitudes are expected to reverse. "Now, we are seeing cooperation rather than resistance." According to the pledge, companies are required to fully pay for the construction or upgrade of power facilities to support new data centers, even if these facilities are not yet fully operational. In addition, companies have also committed to hiring local employees, providing skills training, and allowing their backup generators to connect to the public grid when the grid is under stress, in order to enhance regional power resilience. However, there is currently no clear mechanism to monitor whether companies are actually fulfilling their commitments, and the White House has not announced specific implementation and accountability plans. This initiative relies more on corporate self-discipline, and its long-term effectiveness remains to be seen.
