X Money launches limited public beta with William Shatner as a participant, offering deposit yields and cash back, FDIC-insured funds, but no crypto features yet. This marks Musk's key step back into the payment arena.
Elon Musk's payment application, X Money, officially launched its limited external public beta this week. Initial user experience screenshots reveal that users can enjoy deposit yields and cash back features. As one of the beta participants, Hollywood legend William Shatner—best known as Captain Kirk from the original Star Trek series—is among the first to experience the new platform.

It is disclosed that user deposits are held by Cross River Bank, a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), with individual accounts insured up to $250,000. X Money is a crucial component of Musk's vision to create an 'everything app' ecosystem, aiming to integrate payment, private messaging, the AI chatbot Grok, content creation, and digital identity. As early as February this year, Musk stated: 'It will be the central financial hub. This will revolutionize the way money moves.'
After receiving $42 from Musk, Shatner partnered with the X platform to launch a charity auction, selling 42 Beta testing slots for $1,000 each. Each successful bidder will receive a $25 platform gift certificate and the initial $1 transferred by Musk. Subsequently, X and Shatner added 166 more testing slots, continuing the same auction mechanism. Participation requires users to be U.S. residents aged 18 or older and maintain a good standing X account.

While X Money embodies Musk's grand vision for a financial ecosystem, no plans for direct integration with cryptocurrencies have been announced. This move is seen as a landmark return to the payment sector for Musk, who founded X.com in the late 1990s, which later merged with Confinity to become PayPal. The launch of X Money may herald a new round of restructuring in the digital payment landscape.
