UK Lawmakers Urge Ban on Political Crypto Donations

A cross-party UK parliamentary committee has recommended a pause on political crypto donations, citing high risks to the political system and public trust due to a lack of regulation.

In the UK, a cross-party parliamentary committee has urged the government to immediately implement a moratorium on cryptocurrency donations accepted by political parties until more robust safeguards are established. The committee also recommended the creation of a political finance enforcement unit to oversee these activities, lower the minimum reporting threshold for political donations from £11,180 (approximately $14,900) to £500 (approximately $668), and proposed a maximum prison sentence of three years for violations involving foreign funding.

The committee highlighted the increasing threats from foreign states and their influence on the UK's stance on critical issues, particularly concerning relations with the United States, the European Union, and Ukraine.

The report stated that without strong regulatory protections, crypto donations pose an "unnecessary" and "unacceptable" high risk to the integrity of UK politics and public trust.

Crypto Donations Raise Concerns in the UK

Liam Byrne, chair of the Committee on Business and Trade and one of the seven signatories of the letter, stated: "Cryptocurrencies can obscure the true origin of funds, allow thousands of small donations to be made below the disclosure threshold, and expose UK politics to foreign interference."
