The company has successfully recruited the entire team from the AI collaboration platform Cove, not only absorbing the startup's technical talent but also integrating its forward-thinking concepts into its own operations.
This talent acquisition was confirmed on June 9, 2025, marking Microsoft's active expansion of its AI-driven productivity toolset and further solidifying its position in the collaboration software market. Prior to this, Microsoft had deeply integrated Copilot into its ecosystem, and this move highlights the intense competition among tech giants for top AI talent.
Cove's services will officially cease operations on April 1, and all user data will be deleted. The startup has issued full refunds to subscribers for March and initiated a user data export process.
Cove was founded in late 2023 by former Google Maps engineers Stephen Chau, Andy Szybalski, and Mike Chu, with its core product being an infinite AI whiteboard designed to break traditional chat-based interaction models. The platform utilizes user-uploaded PDFs, images, and a built-in browser to provide rich AI context for complex tasks such as travel planning, allowing users to generate contextual modules, cards, tables, and lists.
Despite securing $6 million in seed funding led by Sequoia Capital in 2024, with support from notable investors like Elad Gil and Homebrew, the founders ultimately believed that joining a giant like Microsoft would enable them to achieve their mission more quickly. Cove stated, “As model capabilities rapidly advance, our belief in our mission has only strengthened. We are thrilled to continue this work at Microsoft AI, where we will have the opportunity to realize a grander vision.” The company has committed to ensuring that its core philosophy will continue within Microsoft.
The emergence of Cove directly challenges established collaboration tools like Miro, TLDraw, and Kosmik. Its fundamental idea is that a visual, editable canvas better meets the needs of exploratory, nonlinear work than mainstream chat interaction models, a concept that is becoming central to many next-generation AI interfaces.
Microsoft is no stranger to this field; as early as 2023, it integrated its AI assistant Copilot into the Microsoft Whiteboard application. The acquisition of the Cove team signals Microsoft's intention to directly bring in professional talent and innovative interface design concepts to enrich its collaboration product line. Industry analysts view this as a typical “talent acquisition” strategy, where acquiring an experienced team is often more efficient than building one internally in the fiercely competitive tech industry.
